What is a Claims File, or “C File”?

The Claims File, commonly known as a ‘C File,’ is a comprehensive set of records maintained by the VA for your VA disability claims. This file typically encompasses your Service Treatment Records, previous applications for benefits, and any Rating Decisions made. It’s important to note that this file does not automatically include your post service medical treatment records unless you have specifically submitted them to the VA as part of your disability claim evidence.

For those who have not previously submitted a disability benefits claim, a claims file with the VA would not exist.

Accessing your claims file is crucial as it enables you to review and contest evidence currently on record for your claim or to supplement additional evidence that may not be present.
